ROAD MASTER JOB DESCRIPTION
General Definition
This employee is responsible for maintaining and supervising the maintenance of township roads, including drainage systems, traffic control signs and markings, removal and control of snow and ice, and the maintenance and repair of equipment, public buildings and grounds. Projects are planned and carried out independently in accordance with overall road maintenance plans of the township supervisors.
Duties
- Supervises and works with other employees in repairing road surfaces, installing and repairing signs and removing debris from drainage areas.
- Constructs, repairs, and supervises the construction and repair of surface and subsurface drainage systems to control water on roadways.
- Directs and participates in snowplowing, cindering, and salting operations when weather conditions require.
- Makes recommendations to township supervisors regarding specifications for contracted road repair and construction work and for new equipment to be purchased.
- Makes recommendations to township supervisors regarding equipment and supply needs for road maintenance.
- Keeps maintenance records, work time records, usage reports for materials and other required reports and records.
- Performs or schedules routine preventative maintenance and repairs to equipment.
- Makes recommendations to the board of supervisors on hiring of new road crew members. Trains new road crew employees, assigns and evaluates their work, and recommends disciplinary actions if required.
- Supervises vegetation control and maintenance of township grounds and right of ways.
- Supervises the maintenance of the township building and grounds including, septic, well, recycling area, paving, snow removal, overall building maintenance and makes recommendations to the township supervisors regarding building maintenance needs.
- May attend training courses applicable to the position as approved by the board.
- Maintains communication with township officials including the township secretary and board of supervisors on any equipment, supply, road or building maintenance needs.
- Is responsible for reporting reasonable suspicion of drug use to the board and will be required to have pre-employment and random drug testing.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of standard practices and techniques of road maintenance.
Knowledge of the roads, road conditions, and road maintenance needs of the township. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of road maintenance.
Skill in the operation of dump trucks, snow plows, graders, backhoes, mowers and other maintenance equipment.
Ability to recognize road repair needs and to accurately estimate material and labor requirements for specific projects.
Ability to assign and direct the work of other employees.
Must have CDL license.
